OBITUARIES
Daniel L. McClellan
Daniel L. McClellan, age 30, passed away on July 17, in St. Augustine Manor after a lingering bout with AIDS.
Danny enjoyed a fulfilling life of travel and enjoyment. A free-spirited individual, Danny succeeded in most everything that he set out to do, including his last trip to Hawaii in March, just as his illness began to take him
over.
Danny is survived by his parents, Janet and Ted McClellan of Gastonia, North Carolina; brothers, Michael, Ted Jr. and Bill; and sister Annette, along with best friends Michael Yabroff and Randy Burgess. He is also survived by a host of many friends who gave him so much support during his illness. A memorial service was held at St. Augustine Manor on July 19.
Danny will be missed by everyone.
Jon Hinson
Jackson, Miss.-Jon Hinson, the conservative U.S. representative from Mississippi who became a gay rights activist after a sodomy arrest cut short his political career, has died. He was 53 years old.
Hinson died July 21 at his home in Silver Spring, Md. He died of respiratory failure resulting from AIDS, said Kate McQueen of Washington, a friend of Hinson's.
Hinson rose from relative political obscurity to win Mississippi's 4th Congressional District seat in 1978 as a conservative Republican. He resigned April 13, 1981, early in his second term, after his arrest in a men's restroom of the Longworth House Office Building on an oral sodomy charge. He was taken into custody along with a male Library of Congress employee.
After he resigned, Hinson came out, and worked to further lesbian and gay civil rights. He never returned to Mississippi, but remained in the Washington, D.C. area, first in Alexandria, Va., and then Silver Spring, Md.
Obituaries
He helped organize Virginians for Justice, a statewide lesbian-gay civil rights group. As a former Marine, he fought against the ban on gays in the military. He also was a founding member of the Fairfax Lesbian and Gay Citizens Association in Fairfax County, Va.
Hinson also disclosed that he was among the four survivors of a 1977 fire that killed nine people at the Cinema Follies, a Washington X-rated gay male theatre.
Hinson recalled the fire in a Jan. 28, 1994 article in the Washington Blade, a gay weekly. He said he had been in the theatre about 15 minutes when the fire broke out and acrid smoke filled the building. He was rescued from under a pile of bodies.
When he was first elected to Congress, Hinson was "still closeted and into heavy denial," he wrote in the Blade piece.
Hinson is survived by his friends Nicholas Freer and Barry Forbes, Kate McQueen, and J.C. Guyon, all of the Washington area; and his brother Robert.
